Sat in his lair, Orruck warlord Naythorn Pain of the Ootribe was not at all content with the general lack of violence and debauchery of late. It had been a slow year and sitting around twiddling his thumbs sat ill with him, there were foes to best and land to pillage, yet none would take on the challenge!

He would have fallen to misery, followed by rage and finally the wholesale slaughter of the entire tribe, had his scouts not come thundering into the settlement with news of a great cloud upon the horizon, an army on the march for sure! With the eagerness only the greenskins can show for war, they mobilized to meet the threat…

As the Orrucks deploy their battleline, the impetuous charioteers charge forward.

Orruck ‘Ard boyz prowl through the ‘mythical menhirs’

Whooping their bestial war cries, the Orrucks thunder toward the Khemri phalanx, upon the backs of their monstrous porcine mounts.

As the boar riders smash into the Undead front rank, splintering shields and femurs alike, they are suddenly engulfed by the shambling horde.

As the greenskin cavalry is beset by skeleton legions, the Orruck ‘ard boyz clash with the Ushabti constructs.

The Orruck’s savagery is no match for the Ushabti’s near limitless resilience.

Whilst most of the wargaming folk of this fair Isle made their way to the great city of Londinium, to the spend all their hard-earned guineas at Salute 2017, my good friend Pancake Payne and I decided to get together for some gaming goodness.

He was very eager to learn to play Age of Sigmar, so we threw down some models and terrain, and got down to some dice rolling. Being a training game we dispensed with a scenario and simply got down to the basics, which is great for learning (or indeed reminding one’s self of) how to play the game, but it does lack the interest factor that a good scenario would provide.

I wrote a post reviewing my first encounter with Age of Sigmar, which can be found here, and although I stand by my initial thoughts, I do feel that this game can be let down by the amount of dice rolling that is required. That being said, getting together with Pancake is always good fun and although I did manage to gain the upper-hand over his greenskins, they were definitely tough enough to make it a hard-fought victory for the legions of Khemri.

” With your heart beating in your ears and your breath ragged in your lungs, you flee for your life. The distant hills echo with the howls of beasts and you know that they have your scent. Doom comes on necrotic paws and you realise that you cannot out-run the relentless advance of death itself.

Taking a look behind you causes you to stumble. Rolling and careening through the dust and scree, you finally skid to a halt. As you lie dazed and confused, the sounds become distant in your ringing ears… again those unearthly howls.

It takes a moment to regain your composure… You have to get up! You have to keep running! Scrambling to your feet you dash forwards, your legs feel like jelly and your feet are like lead… but you must keeping going!

Rounding a large boulder you are stopped dead in your tracks. Before you stand a triumvirate of horrors. They are head and shoulders taller than you and each has a desiccated animal head, reminiscent of the gods of the ancients.

You sink to your knees, your head bowed. This is it! The reaper has finally caught up with you! And as they begin their inexorable advance, despair finally overwhelms you and you begin to sob…”

Knowing me knowing you(tube)

I, like many a miniature gamer, spend a lot of time painting, and for entertainment enjoy nothing more than to watch (or at least listen) to YouTube whilst I’m doing so. Now there are a lot of entertaining folks out there in the YouTube community sharing their hobby and one such man is the legend that is Mr. Reef Beastman.

For many years Reefy produced a monthly show about his war gaming exploits, usually tallying in at 3 to 4 hours at a time and although he is now in semi-retirement and produces shows less frequently, I still enjoy watching them whenever he posts something new (or just re-watch some of the old ones which he has saved to his new channel).

I have made comments on videos and chatted with Reef in the past and one such interaction led to us arranging to meet up for a game at Warhammer World. I pulled together a small selection from my Grande Armée de la Mort, to field a detachment which will hither to be known as the ‘Children of the Hydra’ and headed off for my first ever game of Age of Sigmar.

Let battle commence

The tables at Warhammer World are breathtaking and the one Reef had booked for our game, a dedicated AoS board, was definitely no exception.

WW Pic 1

Tomb Kings cavalry march forward under the unseeing gaze of decrepit statuary.

The ad hoc scenario involved Reef’s intrepid Sigmarites attempting to re capture their leader and his trusty Griffhound from the clutches of the Tomb King’s embrace. I had an absolute blast and after 4 hours of laughter and mayhem, the crumpled corpses of Sigmairites were piled like cord wood and the dreaded ‘Children of the Hydra’ retained the field (the name eludes to the fact that, like the legendary beast, every time you remove one head, two seem to grow back in its place as the dead rise to replenish their ranks)

WW Pic6

I had such a good time that we agreed to meet up the next day to see if Reefy could salvage some honour. This game was not only to take place on another table but was to also include a third member, Mr. Remington Steele (another You tuber of much renown), who would be arriving later on in the battle to side with whoever seemed the most beleaguered. The scenario this time had ‘The Children of the Hydra’ besieging the Sigarites in their Dreadhold fortress.

When Remington arrived he was recruited by Reef and deployed his Vampire Counts forces in my rear echelons, caught between the two I battled valiantly until we ran out of time.

Both Reef and Rem uploaded videos on their channels and I will embed them in to the comments section below. but feel free to click on the following links and check out their channels:

Keep it simple… stupid – My thoughts on age of sigmar

As these rules have no point system, they are definitely not designed with the competitive war gamer in mind and that suits me just fine, I never liked having to play quartermaster before the battle and work out points down to the last dagger, making sure everything was equal.

Unequal battles can be very entertaining and fun, you just need to re-define the victory conditions via some kind of scenario. In the example of the 300 Spartans, they were hugely out-numbered, used terrain to best advantage but ultimately died to a man! Does this mean the battle of Thermopylae counts as a win for the Persians? Not necessarily as the Spartans were there to buy time for the Greeks to muster a force capable of facing the Persian threat, they achieved that even at the cost of their own lives.

One of the interesting ideas with AoS is that when deploying your forces, alternating the placement of units, at any time one player can choose to stop deploying any more troops. If this happens the other player can, if they wish, keep on placing units. When one side is out-numbered by a certain amount they can choose one of a selection of ‘sudden death’ victory conditions such as – ‘Assassinate the enemy general’ Achieving this mission (even at the cost of your whole army) will win you the game immediately. Now tell me that’s not the perfect plot for an epic fantasy story!

The rules themselves are only four pages long and many have scoffed that they are too simple, there are two points I have on this subject. Firstly, simple doesn’t mean stupid, some of my favourite games have very simple rules and are no less challenging for it (how many rules are there in chess? I’m led to believe that it is a very tactical game in deed! I’m certainly rubbish at it!)

Also the small set of core rules is somewhat deceptive as every single unit, monster and hero has a war-scroll for it, these provide extra rules and stats specific to them. The war-scrolls for the game we played added another 6 pages of rules for me to use!

The rules and war-scrolls for all the armies are free to download from the Games Workshop website for you to peruse so I wont go in to all the details, but if you are looking for a simple, fun, scenario-driven fantasy war game it is definitely worth a try.

My only gripe is to do with shooting, any unit can shoot both into and out of close combat, now this is somewhat of a double-edged sword and I will try to elucidate as to what I mean by this.

During my own turn, when my skeleton archers were engaged in close combat with an enemy, they were able to either shoot their bows at point-blank range in to the unit with which they were engaged, or ignore them entirely and shoot at any other unit that they had range and line of sight to. This seems a little incongruous to me as I would have thought that they might have been a bit too busy defending themselves from the enemy to knock, draw and loose arrows.

On the other hand there are also less conventional shooting attacks. For instance, my War Sphinx has ‘Fiery Roar’ shooting attack and it seems much more plausible for an enormous beast to roar in to the face of an engaged enemy before slashing, stomping and biting them to pieces. However, Games Workshop have always had the ‘Most Important Rule’ included in their rule sets and it is this:

‘In a game as detailed and wide-ranging as Warhammer: Age of Sigmar, there may be times when you are not sure exactly how to resolve a situation that has come up during play. When this happens, have a quick chat with your opponent, and apply the solution that makes the most sense to you both (or seems the most fun!). If no single solution presents itself, both of you should roll a dice, and whoever rolls higher gets to choose what happens. Then you can get on with the fighting!’

I have always liked this rule a lot, there are no lives or nations at stake in the hobby of war gaming only friendships. Is it really worth getting annoyed about something not going in your favour? Better to come up with house rules for anything you don’t agree with later and implement them in the next game.

All in all I had a great time playing Age of Sigmar and would definitely raise up my undead horde for another game.

I have acquired some new miniatures for my Grande Armée de la Mort, and having plenty of time on my hands I have managed to paint them up. These minis were made by Rackham Miniatures and are beautifully sculpted with lots of elaborate details.

The Wraith floats through the shadows, brandishing a wicked blade with which to reap the wretched souls of the living, whilst the ancient armoured skeleton warriors provide a cadre of experienced generals to lead the undead legions of the Ghoul Queen.

Teaparty Alt 1 My fantasy campaign with Graham has been hotting up with our second battle taking place this week. The first scenario saw King Graham Ironfoot’s Dwarves holding the Hellmouth Pass against an outnumbering horde of undead minions, funneling them in to a bottle-neck and destroying them completely. In the second confrontation he sent out word to call all the Dwarfish clans to war…

Scenario 2 – Gathering the Clans

In this battle Graham and I deployed our 36 point armies on the table as shown. After deployment we rolled for the weather and with a heavy morning fog rolling across the field, battle commenced…

Deployment map

Fog

From the fog, ominous shapes can be dimly seen as they shamble forwards. The Dwarf crossbowmen hold their fire until sure of a good target…

The Ghoul queens new steed Alt

From the howdah of her personal War Sphinx the Ghoul Queen urges on here fell minions…

Dwarf redeployment Alt

The fog lifts only to be replaced by sleet and snow, further hindering the Dwarf’s advantage of ranged weaponry and as the Undead come inexorably closer the Clans desperately attempt to form-up to meet them…

Undead Cavalry Alt

Undead Cavalry sally forth from the horde to harry the left flank of the Dwarf battle line…

Undead Horde

Suddenly the snows abate, the clouds part and the crisp morning sun shines down upon the host of walking undeath bearing down upon the Dwarven defenders…

Kalee

Lead by the beautiful and deadly Kalee, the vanguard unit smashes into the Dwarf battle line, slaying the centre crossbowmen regiment to the last Dwarf and advancing on in to the resultant breach in the line…

Dwarf Retreat 2

The Dwarves retreat, desperately hoping to reform on the far side of the river…

Dwarf Retreat

Even the fearless and resolute Greybeards see the danger of being surrounded with the river at their backs…

Greaybeard Charge

However, they are unable to out-pace the fleet cavalry and decide that it would be better to die facing the enemy. With renewed courage they charge into the flank of the horsemen, smashing them to flinders!..

Kelee and the Bear

Inspired by his courageous brethren, the bear rider confronts Kalee. As the old Dwarven proverb goes “Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you!”. However, the heartless automata are unmoved by the destruction of their champion, and the bear rider’s victory is a brief one…

Underminer attack

Meanwhile, The Ghoul Queen has problems of her own as the Dwarf secret weapon, Underminers, surface and attempt to overwhelm her. They are crushed under the tread of her mighty War Sphinx but the brief respite allows the Dwarf Sage to cast the ‘Skies Fall’ spell, slaying Necromancer and steed both…

Greybeards Die Hard

With the fell Necromancer and her Champion vanquished the Dwarves make a desperate last stand at the water’s edge, hoping to stay alive long enough to watch the remaining undead crumble to ash once the last vestiges of the magic animating them bleeds away. Alas they are overcome and not a single Dwarf is spared.

Upon the carrion field

As the last sounds of slaughter abate, the Dwarven Clans are shattered asunder and the undead horde dissipates, leaderless they shamble through the land without direction. A Pyrrhic victory at best for the forces of Undeath, but there are plenty of practitioners of the Necrotic arts and always more material with which to work. Most important of all is to remember that you cannot kill death and villains are never truly vanquished…

Overview

A very tense and interesting battle for both Graham and myself, my early success can be attributed to the capricious weather which cloaked my approach nicely and saved me from a hail of crossbow fire for the first couple of turns. Indeed all seemed lost for Graham’s stunties, but he resolutely forged on and managed to deal me several terrible blows, not least the destruction of my Necromancer, the very linchpin of my whole army! The day saw final victory to the legions of Undeath but at what cost? The next instalment will see the Dwarves attempting to close the Hellmouth Pass for good as a brave holding force hold the Undead long enough for Dwarven miners to collapse the cliffs to either side.

I have been beavering away at the hobby bench these past couple of weeks adding new troops to my Grande Armée de la Mort. The first addition is this War Sphinx with howdah which will count as a heavy chariot in God of Battles.

war sphinx

As well as this monster I have been doing some converting to create an undead cavalry unit with a difference but have still to finish them.

I will be getting together with Graham very soon to fight out the next battle of our fantasy campaign and I hope to get my new reinforcements ready to take to the field for my next foray against his infernal Dwarven clan.

Teaparty Alt 1

Over the last couple of weeks, my good friend Graham and I have been locking heads in the realms of fantasy with God of Battles by Jake Thornton. In our previous battle, my Undead horde destroyed Graham’s Dwarves in a glorious orgy of blood, so we decided this time to do a follow-on scenario.

We used scenario two from the rulebook in which Graham’s Dwarven survivors attempted to fight their way to safety through a blocking force that had stolen a march on them whilst also holding off the rest of the Undead horde that were still in hot pursuit!

Fighting Withdrawal

IMG_0812

The Dwarven survivors set off on their forced-march to the safety of the mountains.

IMG_0815

A pursuing horde of Undead is held off by Dwarf Berserkers as the rest of the column make their escape.

IMG_0819

More Undead and their ghoulish followers appear upon the horizon, attempting to block the Dwarf’s path.

IMG_0810

More Ghouls charge from the trees only to be confronted by the resolute Dwarves led by a fearsome Cave Bear.

IMG_0808

The Dwarves prepare for a valiant final stand as the fell masses of the Ghoul Queen surge forward, moving in for the kill.

Unfortunately, our time ran out with the battle still perched on a razor’s edge. However, we decided that the Undead had managed a moral victory as the Dwarves would have been hard pressed to extricate themselves from the pursuing hordes of Undead horrors. It was a very tense game that could have gone either way, and we both had a lot of fun and has inspired us to think about running a campaign.

To this end I have uncovered a very interesting campaign set from RPGDriveThu called War of the Dead, this structured campaign book has 12 scenarios in which the undead are ravaging the land, and it is up to the living to stop them! I am really looking forward to getting my teeth into this and hope to write a little more on this in due time.

Raising the muster

I also took some time, this week, to do some recruiting for my ever-expanding army and what better way to show honour to my brave enemies than to dig up a few of their ancestors!

IMG_0823

The standard-bearer to the left was fixed with the addition of a trophy, in the form of a Dwarf head, that I hope will stop the flag pole from snapping off again. The Dwarven Skeletons were created by cutting a few millimetres out of the legs of a Tomb Kings miniature and although they are still a little bigger than most 28mm dwarves (the Dwarf on the right gives a good comparison), I am still quite happy with the result.

I have also used some old miniatures from the bit’s box to create a Dwarf baggage train for our battles too! And as Graham and I are getting together for another encounter this week I hope to get it on the table sometime soon.

Undead 1 A series of unfortunate events have kept me away from blogging over the course of the last couple of weeks, however what doesn’t kill me can only make me stronger! which leads me nicely on to the subject of this post… I have at least been steadily working through my ‘Grande Armée de la Mort’ and I have finally painted everything for my 24pt army save ‘The Ghoul Queen’ herself (Who will be getting some special attention very soon). So with no further ado here are some pictures…

‘Baggage Camp’

The figures on the baggage camp are removable and double as ‘Activation Counters’ whilst playing games of God of Battles. I have left spaces on the camp for some flowers which I will be picking up at ‘Salute 2014’ upon the ‘morrow, but all told I’m almost finished… Almost being the operative word because as well as needing to paint her malevolent highness I also have one more thing to do… My good friend Quirkworthy commented that the large shields of some of the skeletons would look good with some heraldry applied and brought to my attention Little Big Man Studios who make banners and shield transfers for a number of different eras and scales. I found that the transfers for Perry Miniatures ‘Burgundian Pavises’ were a close match and ordered some sheets with alacrity. They arrived very recently and so I have done a test model…   IMG_0728   These transfers look fantastic and are very easy to apply (they are provided with an instruction leaflet which shows you how to go about it). Now they obviously don’t match my GW shields perfectly, however, with a dabbing of GW’s new ‘Typhus Corrosion’ special effects paint I have blended it in nicely and I am most happy with the result! I will be giving the same treatment to the rest over the weekend and hope to get The Ghoul Queen prepared for a coat of paint next week. Once those little tasks are complete I will probably start looking towards the next stage of this project but more on that next time!..

Earlier this month I attended a ‘God of Battles’ tournament at Foundry Miniatures. Jake ‘Quirkworthy’ Thornton, the designer of this excellent fantasy game, ran the day and although a petite affair it was a most enjoyable time.

My Undead army project had been sitting on the back-burner since my last post in March, buried but not forgotten, and I thought that Jake’s tournament would be a great reason to rustle them up and blow off the cobwebs!

Grande Armée de la Mort

After many, many smashing defeats my first problem was to reform my army into a better fighting force and so after much introspection I decided on a final army list:

  • A Necromancer with Sacred Texts
  • A Blacksoul
  • 3x Formed units of Skeleton Hordes
  • 3x Loose units of Ghouls

This force gives me a solid but flexible battle line with formed units in the centre and on both flanks, providing mutual support for each other, whilst my loose units can either bolster the line and or be thrown forward as a skirmish screen.

My new force provided me with a reasonable degree of success at the tournament, as I managed to finish second after winning two out of three battles! Now we’re talking! And with such progress I have been inspired to get my miniatures somewhere towards being fully assembled and painted. I gave a glimpse of one of my part-finished Skeleton Hordes In my ‘Rattling Bones’ post and have now finished them off completely. Within this unit can also be found one of my two main characters.

Kalee

“Ah… Kalee… I picked well in Kalee. She is my strong right-hand, the Lost Slayer. Her beauty and grace are matched only by her base cunning…”

The main theme of my army is the juxtaposition between absolute beauty and abject horror, so both of the main characters are women who’s eternal beauty is fed by dark magic that leaves them forever surrounded by death and decay.

Kalee is my Blacksoul, a powerful undead warrior of yore, raised by the Ghoul Queen to bolster her ever-growing horde. This Hasslefree miniature is one that I bought several years ago simply because I fell in love with her on site! Kev White is an amazing sculptor of the female form who seems to capture that quintessential ‘femininity’ that I find is sadly lacking in many other sculpts.

Going on Campaign

With my first formation finished (and most happy I am with it too!) I will endeavour to press on with the next one and am looking forward to this coming Saturday (5th October) as Jake is intending to run a ‘God of Battles’ Campaign Day. Hopefully another of my formations will earn their paint job!

‘Sticks and stones may break my bones but there are plenty more where they came from. My ‘Grande Armée de la Mort’ is never stronger than when in the presence of death and the heat of battle!…’

Having pitted my wits against the inscrutable Quirkworthy just the other day, I feel that I have finally started to get the hang of  commanding these little boney buggers! I have tried several different formations for a 24 pt army and have finally settled for a solid and flexible force…

‘Grande Armée de la Mort’

Necromancer with Armour of Night, Souldrinker and two Sacred Texts leading two Skeleton Hordes and three Gaggles of Ghouls…

Now for the hard work, building & painting them!?

One unit that is reaching completion is this skeletal horde in the making…

I am most pleased with how the colouring has come out because this is the first time I’ve painted a whole unit using this method. Firstly I undercoated them with GW Skull White and then mixed GW paints and washes to produce custom inks, drybushing highlights as I went. Just the bases to finish now!

There are only twelve models, having started out (un)life as Skeleton Warriors, so I’m going to grab for my spade and go rustle up a fourth rank!
